As part of the forward planning process, the Government requires Councils to carry out a thorough land search as part of a Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) to make sure it is fully aware of sites that might be capable of use for housing development within the borough. In line with wider Government guidance, which includes ensuring that everyone has the opportunity of living in a decent home, the SHLAA will seek to identify sites for all types of housing including Gypsy and Traveller and Travelling Showpeople accommodation.
The purpose of the SHLAA is to understand the level of housing potential within the Borough. This will be achieved by:
- Identifying sites with potential for housing,
- Assessing their suitability for housing,
- Identifying any constraints to development, and
- Concluding whether suitable sites are deliverable and available for allocation if needed.
